Miles Davis - Live in Euorpe 1967

miles davis was such a towering figure in the jazz world, reknowned for his playing, innovation, and ability to find talented sidemen, that his groups are often referred to as "great". for example, the miles davis quintet that recorded 'live in europe 1967' is often referred to as his second great quintet. while i can't say whether the likes of john coltrane, wayne shorter, and herbie hancock wouldn't have gained prominence on their own, it's interesting that they were all in miles davis groups early in their careers, before making names for themselves.

this description is also wholly accurate. saying one of those two quintets was better than the other is to instigate a pointless argument (they're both incredible). all one can do is admit the other quintet came first.

as for this recording, well, it's not extraneous or excessive, it's a welcome addition to the miles davis catalog.
