Bush - Deconstructed
yeah, i've been gone a while. don't sweat it. this entry is a music review. i'm listening to all my cds in reverse alphabetical order, and today is Bush. yeah, that grunge-by-numbers band from the 90s. no, they don't improve with age, but it's ok. what i realized is that their third release, a remix album called 'Deconstructed' is not as bad as people make it out to be. that said, it is not really for Bush fans, or for fans of dance music or even edgy drum&bass. the problem is, Bush songs are not very good, and remixing them as drum-heavy electronica tracks is not a very good idea. however, a few of them work. Goldie and the members of Bush turn out good remixes, while Jack Dangers turns in what sounds like a Meat Beat Manifesto track with maybe a heavily distorted sample from the original song. i dig it. the other songs are merely ok--they do best when they drop the vocals and focus on a dirty beat and guitar scratches. the Tricky mix of "in a lonely place" is pretty good, though since he produced their original version i wonder what the difference is. i do not know who would buy this album, since not many people are into Bush anymore, and electronica fans are not going to chase down a Bush album, but i am glad i got it. i have noticed that it works best when played loud. very loud. i do not know why this is, but listening to it softly, or on headphones, is more of a let down. it must be that the songs are so basic they have no subtlety to justify attentive listening. just crank it up and drive.
