Tuesday, Mar. 30, 2004 | 13:35 Panacea - Brasilia apologies for not writing here much. it will get better. -- the Brasilia. brasilia is the capital of brazil, and was designed to be the city of the future. it separates work, home, and shopping, so that each is a different part of the residents' lives. however, it neglected sidewalks, and in fact rejects most concessions toward communal living. this makes it a very sterile city, which has since developed a large suburban culture which is both vibrant and sleazy. Panacea does a very good job of translating the inhospitable city into sonic textures (i hesitate to call them songs). i agree with the amg review that while this is clearly a well-composed album, and evocative of its subject matter, it is not something you will want to play very often, just as you probably do not want to live in brasilia. when i played this cd on my home stereo, it sounded like disturbed, paranoid, somewhat disruptive electronic noise. it verges on the industrial. playing it at work through headphones, however, those distorted and unsettling features become enhanced, lending the album an almost unlistenable quality. indeed, you aren't going to play this for fun, but to make yourself tense and uneasy. thus, i like it. i recommend Panacea - Brasilia to anyone who enjoys being made to feel uncertain and unsettled. if you'd rather spend an evening relaxing, this is not the album for you. |
