heavier than thou

i should discuss the two tomahawk shows i saw a few weeks ago, but i won't now because i don't have time. instead i'll ramble about metallica.

--

race day and memorial day circuit city had a sale where every single-disc cd was 9.99. so i bought a bunch of stuff, including all the metallica studio releases between kill 'em all and load.

i hadn't heard the black album since i bought it on tape when it broke way back in 1991, when i played it all the time. more accurately, in 1991 i got into three tapes: sgt. pepper's lonely hearts club band, r.e.m - out of time, and metallica's eponymous release. i have listened to the former two often since then, but hadn't really heard the black album in ten years. wow, ten years.

nevertheless, when i put it on i still knew the words to most of the songs. all the ones i knew back then. enter sandman, sad but true, nothing else matters, the unforgiven. i was still more melody/pop oriented in 1991, so i couldn't get into the heavier numbers.

those three albums, all on tape, are what got me into music. well, modern music, since i'd been singing in the church choir for years already. but my appreciation for popular music and the foundations of my taste lie in those three albums. after that, i consumed music.

deftones play the metro

sorry for the long time gone. i'll get better now.

--

sunday may 11 i saw deftones play the metro here in chicago. it was a surprise show, announced the friday before, and part of a warm up before they join the summer sanitarium tour. and to promote their new, self-titled album.

it was a good idea. however, it was a pretty lame show. for starters, the start time was 7pm, but they didn't come on until sometime after 8, and played ac/dc's "back in black" album through once over the p.a. when the cd started again, the fans were not happy.

deftones have two sounds: loud and angry, soft and angry. the loud and angry song all sound the same, the soft and angry songs all sound the same. the soft songs have more variation, and thus are more interesting, but in a live setting the loud songs are indistinguishable from each other. i like deftones albums, the first three are very good, but the show was boring. it really sounded like they did two songs over and over again, and then a cover of a soulfly song that sounded a lot like one of their own songs (except for the break where chino sang a bit of a shudder to think song). i was not impressed.
